Who issues the CNI?
The national identity card is issued by the DGSN (Délégation Générale à la Sûreté Nationale) through its identification centres in police stations across the country.
Documents usually asked
First card: a certified copy of your birth certificate, a certificate of nationality (from the court), and for married women a copy of the marriage certificate.
Renewal: your old card, a copy of your birth certificate, and the marriage certificate for married women.
Requirements can change: ask your identification centre before you go.
Fees
Sources published in 2026 do not agree on the total amount (issuance fee plus stamp duty, which was recently revised). Ask the identification centre for the current amount and only pay at the official counter, with a receipt.
Collecting your card
Go back to the centre where you applied with your original receipt and another valid ID. Cards that are not collected within six months can be destroyed, so do not wait.
Avoid scams
Nobody can "speed up" your CNI for money outside the official process. Never give your receipt or copies of your documents to intermediaries.
