What is a 4G box?
A home box (MiFi or router) takes a mobile SIM and shares the internet by WiFi with several phones, laptops and TVs. MTN and Orange both sell boxes with dedicated home-internet bundles in Cameroon.
Compare before you buy
- Coverage first: ask neighbours which network works best inside your house. The best box is useless with a weak signal.
- Price of the box and price per GB of the monthly bundle. Prices change often: check the current offer in the official MTN or Orange shop or app on the day you buy.
- Battery or mains: pocket MiFi for travel, router for the home.
- Number of devices it accepts at the same time.
Where to buy
Buy from an official MTN or Orange agency, or a known retailer that gives a receipt and warranty. Online marketplaces such as Glotelho also sell boxes: check the seller, the warranty and that the box is unlocked for your network.
Get better speed
- Place the box high, near a window, away from the TV and microwave.
- Change the default WiFi password on day one.
- Restart the box once a week.
- Stop automatic cloud backups and updates when your bundle is almost finished.
